An MR (medium rigid) licence in Australia allows the holder to drive medium rigid vehicles, such as trucks and buses with a GVM above 8,000 kg. To obtain it, one must hold a current driver’s licence for at least one year and pass both knowledge and practical driving tests.

A HR (heavy rigid) licence in Australia allows the holder to drive heavy rigid vehicles, including trucks and buses with three or more axles and a GVM over 12,000 kg. It requires holding a car (class c) licence for at least two years and passing both knowledge and practical driving tests.

A medium rigid vehicle in Australia is a truck or bus with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) above 8,000 kg. It typically has two axles and can tow a trailer with a GVM up to 9,000 kg.

A heavy rigid vehicle in Australia is a truck or bus with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) over 8,000 kg and three or more axles. It is designed for carrying heavy loads and can also tow a trailer with a GVM up to 9,000 kg.

With an HR (heavy rigid) licence in Queensland, you can drive:

Heavy rigid vehicles with three or more axles and a GVM over 12,000 kg.
Any bus, including articulated buses.
Any towed trailer with a GVM up to 9,000 kg.
Any vehicle allowed under a medium rigid (MR) or light rigid (LR) licence.

A HR (B) licence in Australia allows the holder to drive heavy rigid vehicles, including trucks and buses with a GVM over 12,000 kg, with three or more axles. The “B” endorsement allows the holder to drive automatic or synchromesh manual vehicles and does not allow the holder to drive the Road ranger gear box.

The cost of obtaining an HR (heavy rigid) licence in Australia can vary depending on the state or territory and the driving school you choose. Kms Driving School charges $1340 for 9 hours of training and the use of our truck for the exam (excludes all TMR fees)
